About This Cook

I thought we could try to get to know one another a little better! I mean, I know most of you already, but I want to get to know you in the FOOD sense. So I am posting a bunch of questions, I will answer them first and you can answer them by leaving me comments. Here we go!

1. What are three foods you could eat forever and never, never get sick of?

Italian bread with butter, macaroni and cheese and rocky road ice cream. Carbs much? :)

2. What are some foods that you would not eat again, even if someone offered you money?

Well, how much money? Ok, the list isn't very long for me: ham or seafood salad, lamp, chickpeas and lima beans, deer, scrapple, olives of any kind. There may be more, but those are the things that I immediately shudder as soon as I think of them.

3. What is the best meal that you have ever cooked?

Christmas Dinner, 2006. (Yes I know the date...I keep a notebook.) Roast Pork Tenderloin with Cider Gravy, with Baked Apples Stuffed with Cornbread and Sage. Mmmmm.......just thinking about it makes me want it again.

4. Who does most of the cooking in your family?

I do. My husband likes to cook as well, but our schedules put me in the kitchen more often.

5. What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

Shark and alligator. And sour patch kids dipped in salsa con queso. (the last one was a college dare!)

6. Do you have an embarrassing food story to share?

It doesn't involve me cooking, but working around food. About twelve years ago I had a summer job as a banquet server for a country club. We were working a very large company outing, and their menu choice was picnic-style. We were running out of strawberry shortcake, so I was rushing into the walk-in fridge for more strawberries. The strawberries were up on a high shelf, and no one was around to help me and had been told to get them ASAP! So, always compensating for my height, I jumped to get them off the high shelf. My bad---I ended up taking a shower in thawed berries and juice! (and no, the catering manager did NOT let me go home, I had to finish the night stained, sticky and smelling like Boppin' Berry Cooler!)

7. If you could cook with anyone, who would it be?

My maternal grandfather. He made the meanest roast beef that I have ever tasted! The smell of a roast in the oven to this day makes me think of him and all of the Christmas dinners he made.

8. What is one of your favorite things to make, and your least favorite?

Favorite: My husband and I pick one day out of the holiday season each year to bake. We bake cookies ALL DAY LONG, enjoying each other's company and baking for everyone we know. Our son will hopefully join us in this tradition one day when he's older.

Least favorite: Egg Salad. I abhor the smell of hard-boiled eggs, but my husband loves it. So I make it for him, and call it my "Labor of Love." :)

9. Do you watch the Food Network?

A little bit. I enjoy "Good Eats" with Alton Brown, Iron Chef, Every Day Italian......I liked Rachael Ray's show "30-minute meals" but her voice annoys me! So I get her magazine instead...easier on the eardrums.

10. Finally, do you have any food or cooking advice to give?

People ask me all the time how I can cook so much. I like variety and hate to get stuck in a rut. I just go out and do it! If you can read, you can cook. And don't be afraid to just get in there and mix it up on your own.

So do you know me and my food as well as you think?

1. Three foods: Chocolate ice cream, strawberries, sushi

2. Never to eat again: for money there is nothing I wouldn't eat.

3. Best meal: although I have pulled off some impressive dinners I would have to give it to "Kabobs from Heaven". A steak and scallop kabob that was truely awesome.

4. Who's the cook: yep my schedule keeps me out of the kitchen far too much, so it has to be GG.

5. Weirdest food: easy one, reindeer heart in Tromso, Norway.

6. Embarrising food story: let me just say eggs and garlic don't always mix.

7. Cook with: to pick a celebrity it would of course be Alton Brown, but my true choice will always be Thanksgiving pies with my dad.

8. Most & least favorite to cook: most would be baking almost anything, least would be toast (no creativity).

9. Food network: of course.

10. Advice: leave the recipe aside and just try something.

1. What are three foods you could eat forever and never, never get sick of?

homemade macaroni and cheese, really good pizza, burritos and enchiladas with the fixin's

2. What are some foods that you would not eat again, even if someone offered you money?

anything on that Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern or something that Anthony Bourdain would eat, like bone marrow soup.

3. What is the best meal that you have ever cooked?

I really love comfort food, so maybe when I made Bobby Flay's "roasted vegetable meatloaf with balsamic glaze", its AWESOME! I never really liked meatloaf until this recipe.

4. Who does most of the cooking in your family?

me! i love to cook, looking forward to the day when i have more time to cook interesting meals i run across.

5. What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

ewww... hands down.... pig skin- it was disgusting!! john loves this stuff and made me try it. i could hardly get my tiny bite down. gag reflex, dude.

6. Do you have an embarrassing food story to share?

ok, this is so embarrassing. i was young and inexperienced! the first time i tried to cook lasagna, i didn't know you had to cook the noodles first! so when i took it out of the oven, it was bubbly and delicous looking- and completely CRUNCHY!!! i was so upset!

7. If you could cook with anyone, who would it be?

hmmm.... I will agree with brian- Alton Brown would be hilarious to cook with! With a non-celeb- my friend Chris, we like to pretend we have our own Food Network show.l

8. What is one of your favorite things to make, and your least favorite?

Favorite: cookies of any kind. but not the roll out kind, hate those, ha ha, unless i am doing it with someone else. drop cookies are more my thing!

Least Favorite: i love salads but i hate washing the lettuce! ha ha, sounds stupid, i know.

9. Do you watch the Food Network?

yes, I love it! Favorites being Alton Brown, Bobby Flay, Nigella Lawson, Giada, and although i think tyler florence is highly annoying, his recipes look to die for. rachel ray and paula deen have some good stuff, but i can only take them in doses. too many "ya'lls" and "yum-o's" drive me nutty!

10. Finally, do you have any food or cooking advice to give?

don't use low-fat ingredients or sugar substitutes in recipes! if you are going to cook, then COOK! the real stuff is sooo much better and since food is one of the best things in this world, ENJOY IT! i sincerely believe its one of the true pleasures in life.

Bread and chocolate

2. What are some foods that you would not eat again, even if someone offered you money?

I agree, how much money? Because the question said again; I'd have to say nothing. Things I wouldn't eat unless offered LOTS of money would be gefilte fish {this would actually fall under the again category}, caviar, escargot, pate.

3. What is the best meal that you have ever cooked?

I really don't know...the most fun was "The Last Supper" in Sept. 1994 before Senior year started.

4. Who does most of the cooking in your family?

Me, me, me

5. What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

Crab out of a shell, and peanut butter and mike & ikes.

6. Do you have an embarrassing food story to share?

It doesn't involve me cooking, but working around food. About twelve years ago I had a summer job, and I spilled mushrooms in olive oil all over the freezer floor. I did not last long!

7. If you could cook with anyone, who would it be?

My mom. :)

8. What is one of your favorite things to make, and your least favorite?

I love baking cookies, and I am OCD at decorating them. So, generally christmas cutouts. Least favorite: cleaning chicken to cook.

9. Do you watch the Food Network?

We don't get it, but I did on vacation.

10. Finally, do you have any food or cooking advice to give?
Experiment!
